Verrucas

Verrucas/verrucae or plantar warts are a viral infection of the skin commonly seen on the sole of the foot caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). They are often seen in children. Verrucae not usually painful and not especially contagious. They often resolve after a period of time without treatment.

Traditional methods for treating verrucae have concentrated on tissue destruction or removal by applying acid, excsion (cutting it out) or freezing. These methods have not been shown to be very effective.

If you have a verruca that is causing you pain or you would like to have treated then the most recent development in the treatment of verrucae has been microwave emblation. This involves heating the lesion via a small, precise and safe dose of microwave energy. This alerts the body's immune system to the presence of the lesion and encourages the production of antibodies to kill the infection. There is a short sharp pain during the treatment but no pain or need for dressing after.

Clinical trials have shown that microwave emblation is the most effective treatment currently availabe. In over 80% of cases the lesions resolve after 3 treatments or less.

We have been using Swift for over 5 years at the practice and we and our patients have been delighted with the results.
